Error 172: Google reCaptcha login error, please try again

As part of our continuing efforts to keep our data secure, we have rolled out the use of Google reCaptcha on all of our external-facing forms i.e. login pages.

You can find out more about this technology at https://www.google.com/recaptcha/about/

This technology is the widest using method globally to detect 'suspicious' activity and is used widely across many thousands of websites across the world.

The error which is returned is:

Google reCaptcha has detected potential suspicious behaviour from your device or network and your access has been blocked for a short time - please try again in a few minutes

The error above is when Google detects something suspicious. Google does not tell us what the reason is as the technology is so widely used.

The Google reCaptcha technology looks at a host with things including your activity on our website (i.e. recent failed login attempts, for example) as well as activity across the internet combined with traffic and activity from other devices on your network.

This could mean that someone else in your company but on your network could have been trying to login multiple times and been blocked and, as a result, this has impacted your reputation score.

How to resolve

The easiest way to resolve this is to wait a short while and try again - 99 times out of 100 this will work and you will be able to log in.

If you are still not able to log in, you will need to try a different device - your phone for example.

If you are still not able to log in on your phone, it may be that your network is impacted and you should try an alternative network.

Additionally, you may wish to check your device for viruses and malware as this may also be a contributing factor.
